Chavanges, a spit of a town, nurtured us. Our gracious hosts Agnette and Jean Francois prepared a delicious meal of lamb stew and potatoes dauphine after which we retired to a restful sleep. Brienne le Chateau, a town that boasts Napoleon found his identify at the military school there and has a Chateau and museum to show for it, drained us. Our room was right on a main truck route so while trying to cope with stifling heat we were serenaded by 18 wheelers pumping brakes. No sleep, but the Camino provides so the next day we had a very pleasant, almost restorative walk, to Bar sur Aube.

Dearest Paula and Edward, we have been reading your travel adventures religiously and enjoying them all. (I read them out loud to Charles – in the car – as it seems that’s where we spend a lot of time.) Just returned on Monday from a 12-day trip to the States (Boston, St Louis, LA and Lake Tahoe for a wedding and now we’re on the long drive back to Umbria, having left this morning and planning to be in Stuttgart for the ballet this evening and Munich and Dachau tomorrow- meeting my sister Nancy and catching up with our son Richard late in the afternoon. Then onto Italy arriving on Tuesday to get ready for our weekend party for Charles.’ birthday. We will miss you very much! But we think what you’re doing, seeing, experiencing is so memorable and we love your short takes on villages unknown to us – and your honest appraisals. What a great adventure. Over Jubilee weekend we were in Montefiascone with Lyndsey and Ian and met some pilgrims who corrected us on the pronunciation of Francigena! Let us know where you are in the later half of August as we’d love to walk with you – if your dance card isn’t already full!
