Pope to Puglia Day 11 Sessa Arunca to Teano – 19km

Walked by an old and unmarked church carved into a rock but of unknown origin or date.   The iconography was unidentifiable.   We paused for a while to imagine what it could have been concluding that it was most likely a church destroyed during WW2, but who knows it could have been an Etruscan temple infected by the Baroque.     We are walking along the Via Appia, through old olive groves, where gnarly trees have survived hundreds of years, through earthquakes, plagues, famine, wars and human neglect but continue to produce a life-giving elixir for our benefit.   Teano was a welcome relief even though it required a 300m climb, at the end of the day, up a deeply troughed escarpment.   At Teano we enjoyed dinner at a restaurant that where patrons were out of Godfather central casting.

  1. arunca teano. Looks like the last stretch due east before the A1 and the mountains. Interesting infected church. Olive groves can survive anything. You both look good and am enjoying your posts. My messages don’t seem to come through because I already have an account with WP and it defaults to it. buon cammino Leo

  2. We get your comments and enjoy them, including the detailed history of the WW2 campaigns. Just finished Atkinson’s account of the Italian campaign in WW2. This area was hammered, little regard for civilians or even the troops. Gen Alexander and Gen Clark just wanted the laurel for conquering Rome. What a bunch of arse holes.

  3. This is so beautiful — as many of your posts, but that church is haunting and evocative. All the pix are gorgeous. I’m just so sorry you didn’t post a surreptitiously-taken photo of the restaurant patrons. (I have similar problems wondering if my posts have worked, and I may have subscribed multiple times by mistake! No matter.)
